The estate has been occupied since at least the 12th century, with the site occupied by a fortified castle known as Lamothe or La Mothe (from motte, a small rise in the land), and wine under names such as “Margou” and “Margous” was known in the 15th century, but it was with the arrival of the Lestonnac family in the 16th century that wine production became of particular importance, and in the 1570s Pierre de Lestonnac expanded the property and cleared many of the grain fields to make way for vines

Thibault Pontallier

Thibault Pontallier is the son of Paul Pontallier ‘Directeur General’ of Château Margaux. Thibault is the Chateau’s Ambassador for Asia, touring the region and presenting the illustrious wines and history of this famous first growth. Thibault’s father joined Château Margaux in the early 1980s when he was just 27 years of age. He has been Corinne Mentzelopoulos’s (the Chateau’s owner) right hand man ever since. From his debut vintage in 1983 to the incredible back-to-back recent vintages of 2009 & 2010 Paul Pontallier rightfully takes his place as one of the finest winemakers on the planet today. Having ‘grown up’ at the Chateau during this incredible period of advancement and success, Thibault has a unique and unrivalled knowledge of their wines, the secrets behind his father’s success and the magic that makes Château Margaux one of the premier names in the world of fine wine.

Thibault was educated in Europe’s most prominent business schools – HEC Paris Business School and the Management dual master’s degree.  During his childhood, he was nurtured by his father, obsessed with the colorful world of wine. He recalled: “Ever since my childhood, I have experiences with wines! At the time, my father was appointed general manager of Chateau Margaux, I was allowed to dip my fingers into a glass of wine. That began a love affair with wine which incidentally began at Chateau Margaux.” After graduation, Thibault Pontallier to attended New York professional post-graduate courses in New York where he acquired knowledge of wine, wine tasting in the world-renowned magazines and wine retail sector. Now as the brand ambassador of Asia (based in Hong Kong) he provides a positive marketing brand in Asia, but also for extensive exchanges with wine experts, the industry, visited the import and retailers, and organized the dinner and tasting a range of activities to enhance the status and visibility of Château Margaux in the Asian market.
